I have seen other complaints here of other sudden overage packs being added in a short amount of time and it seems some want to blame the customer or their device, especially iphones or ipads, for overage data charges.
My story is similar except my device is the UNITE mobile hotspot which I've used for 2 years with no problems with my iPad mini (no cellular). I never use more than 6GB of data and so occasionally I incur one overage pack but recently in the space of 45 minutes, while the wifi was on, I discovered--too late--a string of overage notices in my mail:
11:33am......5888 mb used
11:38am......6144
11:53am......6912
11:59am......7168
12:16am......7936
I only had a couple of worksites open that I use to pick up my teaching jobs. Very low-data use on those. I do not play games, watch movies or anything of that sort other than at the end of the month I might watch a couple of YouTube vids but in this case, I had very little data left to not go over 6GB so I wasn't using it much. As soon as I discovered this 3-overage pack invasion, I called ATT customer service and the woman was nice but didn't seem to know a lot or could not share why this was happening, but she did allow a $25 credit.
However, I was left with $5 more to pay for data I did not use. What one is left with after this type of surprise is to be constantly watching the data meter bar on the UNITE and your emails in case of another sudden invasion, and wondering whether someone is riding on my "secure" system and eating up data quickly. I checked my ipad for things running in the background but found nothing. I have very few apps, about 5, that I use, and am quite conservative in its use because I need the connection for work.
My question is why aren't there any real answers on this website for this problem? There seems to be blaming going on and bickering, unfortunately. And if this $25 credit I rec'd is a "one time thing" as the rep said, then what if it happens again? Can the number on the UNITE be changed?
