I cancelled a phone three months ago and I'm still being charged

I called ATT and cancelled one of our cell phone.  I was told that the contract wasn't up until August 20th.  So I asked that the phone be cancelled at that time and was assured that it would be.  It looks to me like I am still paying for a phone that hasn't been used in three months.  My son moved out and has his own phone company three months ago.  What do I do?
