Charged Early Termination Fee Because Palisades Store Couldn't Follow Directions

I recently got into a contract with AT&T with a Blackberry Classic Phone. I chose AT&T because you were one of the last few carriers to carry Blackberry. I got the phone and I had it for about a month and I absolutely hated it. Luckily, I spoke to customer care and they agreed to allow me to return it and get another phone. I was told to go the the AT&T store in the Palisades Mall in Nyack, NY and have the manager process a return. It was noted on my customer account and everything. I got to the store and I was told by the manager that she could not process a return because her system would not allow her to, but she could give me a new phone and allow me to keep my old number.

 

Well, I received my bill for the month and I am being charged for two lines although I only have one phone. I reached out to customer care again and I was told that because my new phone is a payment plan phone that I will either have to pay off the whole phone balance or pay an early termination fee in order to just have one phone line and be charged for just one phone line.

 

This is absolutely absurd. It's not my fault that they could not process the return in the store. I should not have to pay for two phone lines or a $305.00 cancellation fee when I only have one phone. Please advise. It is totally unfair to make me pay an early cancellation fee because the manager at the store could not process the return properly as she was instructed to do.
