Beware: Why your constantly over usage on data

My story:

I've had at&t for about two years now and I'm also a premier customer through my company. My wife and I started off with a shared 3gb plan as we had WiFi at home and used it with no issues for almost a year. After upgrading to the Note 3 however everything changed. We went over data that very same month. So after paying a few months of overcharges we upgraded to the 8gb plan thinking that we only go over by maybe 1gb so we should be fine. WRONG! We again went over the new 8gb allotment. I checked our data usage and everything seemed normal. We don't stream HD video.. Nor do we watch much streaming video from YouTube ect.. And we played a normal amount of games. So after calling CS to discuss a different unrelated topic the employee advised me I was available for a free upgrade to 16gb. I thought well this should be great! Again.. WRONG.. we are now constantly getting close or going over on a 16gb plan while still using our phones the same way we had when we first signed up. We most certainly will be leaving at&t as soon as our phones are paid for and switching to an unlimited plan. I have also advises my employer (bank of America) about the shady business going on and have requested legal to read the TOS to possibly file charges for breach of contract and theft. Now then. Here is the reason alot of you are going over on your DATA.
1. when you are at home or somewhere that offers WiFi, you phone may and usually does show that you are connected. The real truth is most of the time you aren't! This is a known issue with at&t and they simply refuse to do anything about it. Hey free money is free money right? Want proof? Go to McDonald's and access their free WiFi or another place of your choosing and watch your cell data. You'll notice your still using mobile data even though your on WiFi.

2. Unless you have this option on your phone.. When your phone sleeps e.g the phone is on and your screen is black. WiFi is disabled automatically! So even if your home and think your using WiFi while you sleep.. Guess what.. Nope.. Your using data. Some phones now are offering a solution to this in the data/power management options however.
