Cancelation - Charged for the following billing cycle

I ended my 2-year contract on Sept 14th and went to an AT&T store to renew. However, the store clerk told me that the iPhone 6 wouldn't be available until the following day and I couldn't change phones because I wouldn't be able to renew my 2-year contract until the 15th. I decided to go to another carrier on the 15th and AT&T billed me for Sept 15th - October 14th even though I fulfilled my contract. I called the 800 number and the representative said she didn't know why I was charged. She put me on hold and then said I was charged because I needed to cancel my service on the 14th. The lady in the AT&T store told me that I would be breaking my contract on the 14th and would have to pay the early termination fee. I DID NOT HAVE SERVICE, changed carriers, so should not have been billed for the following month. I asked to speak to the manager to the lady from the customer service line, but she put me on hold and no one picked up after 30 minutes and I had already been on hold waiting for the first lady. How do I get a hold of a manager or someone who can help?
