leaving ATT after nearly 10yrs

Lost phone last yr.   Had to go Next plan for new one.  New phone stolen.  Next plan again.  Forced to carry a second line for the stolen phone.  When I asked when I could drop the 2nd line, was told not until I pay off the NEW phone because I had my old # carried to new phone and new # to old phone.  Wouldn't let me pay off old phone first.  Apparently the device charge follows the # not the device itself.  Been a loyal customer for nearly 10yrs and they wouldn't work with me one single bit (aside from trying to convince me that I'm getting a great deal on the shared plan!...yeah, the one I don't need).  She didn't seem to mention that I was getting screwed on both Next plans in the first place.  Joe Blow could walk in tomorrow and get a better deal than I, a longtime loyal customer.  So, tomorrow I will be Joe Blow to another carrier and walk away owing ATT nearly $1,200.
