My wife and I recently cancelled our AT&T service in March. We didn't want to cancel service but we moved to a new state and the cell signal we received here was terrible. I talked to customer service several times and they gave me a cell extender and a small credit to my account for the hassle. As far as I could tell they never tried to fix the signal in my area.
So I decided to switch providers since it is such a hassle not to receive messages or phone calls in the areas that I spend most of my time. I talked to two AT&T customer service representatives and both told me that my contract ends on March 26, 2014. I switched on the 28th of March and now I find out that I am getting charged a $95 early cancelation fee. I talked to customer service to ask why I was being charged the early termination fee. They told me that my phone's contract ended on the 26th but my wife's contract, for some reason, ended on the 1st of April. I don't know why we have two different contract dates since I bought both phones and started up services on the same day. Customer service told me that it was a breach of contract and I can't get a refund.
I understand that a contract is a binding agreement. But it seems very dishonest to me that when I bought both phones at the same time they give me two different contract dates. And when asked, they provided me with only one of the dates and not both.
I know people will say I should have read the contract. But I didn't think that there would be a difference between the dates of our two phones. I mentioned that to the manager, I talked to on the phone, but he did not care.
I doubt anything will come out of this but at least I can warn others to make sure they check for multiple contract dates before they cancel service.
