BAD EXPERIENCE WITH WARRANTY SERVICE

I have been dealing with the warranty department for days now. My son was told by an AT&T rep that it would be better to send in a phone with physical damage to the warranty department for replacement. Of course, the warranty department sent it back, not only with a "kind" note saying what a valued customer I was, but a nasty little note that I am now being charged $712 for the CRACKED AND DAMAGED PHONE THEY SENT HIM IN TRADE FOR THE ORIGINAL PHONE.  The phone they sent has a crack on the back, amost inperceptible, but a crack all the same. Because of that crack ,the battery won't work correctly. I called AT&T very soon after he got the phone, maybe two days after, to report the problem with the battery. We did not know there was that very fine crack on the back of the phone. The warranty department says they cannot do anything to help even though they sent a bad phone to my son in return for  his bad phone. Seems to me I should be able to send this phone back to them and get another crappy phone, and not have to pay this outrageous bill! But no, I was passed around to gosh, I counted six different people, all who told me it was out of their hands, nothing they could do. All I want is the warranty people to take back the defective phone they sent my son and send him a phone that works. And take back the horrible charge they sent me. I am in the process of finding another phone company after 16 years. Sad that it has to end this way; I think I have probably paid AT&T close to $100,000.00 during the time I've been with them, haven't had a serious issue until now.  You'd think when they are getting such bad reviews from folks, they'd want to settle a $712 dispute. But oh well. We will find another carrier.
