Why does AT&T have such terrible experience?

Been an AT&T customer since 2008 for God know why. I called them three time to have my data plan changed so I do not go over and nothing was done and when the bill came out they refused to refund me for the extra data which was there fault since they did not change my plan. On top of that the reception is usually so bad when I call people on the phone that people cannot even hear me. So simple question, why does AT&T suck so much and Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile so much better?
