Billing question

I ordered service from AT&T, was told no deposit was required, called to do a identity verification, was told again no deposit was required, ported number from another provider, received phone and activated it, 4 days later I receive a letter saying I owe a $750 deposit and my service will be disconnected if not paid. My phone is required for my job because I am in an on call rotation. Why was I not told about this deposit up front when I ordered?
