Services disconnected while on a military field exercise

I am beyond furious with AT&T right now: After being on a military field exercise for 60+ days, I return home (two days ago) to a working phone. This morning I resumed the arduous task of going through email and snail mail, 3,567 and 500+, respectively. At 2:30pm I lie down for a nap. two hours later I awaken to my home phone ringing. It's my commander and he wants to know what's wrong with my primary contact number. I assure him nothing is wrong, but he advises he's been trying to contact me for over an hour, to no avail.the contract  I tell him I will look into it, and I do...my service has been suspended! I call AT&T and am told that yes, the bill they sent says due 3/2/2015 and no it does not indicate that disconnection is immiment, but the conditions on the contract I signed 15+ years ago states that service can be interrupted anytime after a due date has passed. I advised the representative I'd been on a military field exercise for a little over two months and had no idea there was a "hidden" due date. He thanked me for my service and told me the date wasn't "hidden," the original due date (for the month in advance) had come due while I was away and the new bill had just posted to the account, making my account "gravely" delinquent. I again inquired about the bill indicating the 3/2 due date and he said "I don't know why we do that and then disconnect service." Neither do I...neither do I.

He proceeded to tell me he'd be happy to take a payment over the phone for the past due amount and I told him I wanted to pay the bill in full. He said OK and began obtaining my credit card information. After I'd given him all of my payment information, he mumbled something about a convenience fee for him to pay the bill. I asked him to repeat it, and he advised there was a $5 convenience fee for him to process my payment for me. I told him to hold for 10 seconds - in which time I went on line and paid the bill in full FOR FREE.

While I know AT&T is a business and business are out to make money (Land of the free), but disconnecting services unnecessarily and attempting to gouge the customer who sincerely wants to do the right thing and is NOT attempting to skip out on a bill or anything sounds pretty communistic to me.

If I had not JUST purchased this $1,000 Galaxy Note Edge, I'd take my services elsewhere now.

A VERY UPSET Long-time AT&T Customer
