How do split bill payment options work?

I tried the split bill option for the first time this month, I paid half and the other half is scheduled for the 15th. My question is, do I need to worry about a disruption of service? The bill says payment is past due but we can't afford to pay before the 15th (christmas was expensive this year) thank you.
