Never informed of data being overused

I was just charged a crapton of overage fees because I was unaware of running out of data. Normally, I receive a text message saying how close I am to the limit and how much I have left. That didn't happen this time and, apparently, ever since I changed to the new plan two months ago it hasn't. This time, it was just big enough to notice right away. Is this something that now happens? It's 100% not awesome and I really wish I was informed before I "upgraded" because I do not have enough money for that kinda stupid. I love AT&T, but this is breaking my heart.
