Contract Ending

My 2 year contract is about to expire. About 18 months ago (my contract was due to expire in several months) I made an attempt to lower my bill. I changed/downgraded my plan. That automatically extended my contract an additional 2 years but I wasn't told upfront that that was going to happen. I was just on the phone withan  AT&T customer service lady who didn't speak English very well and she offered to put me on a Shared Mobile plan. She skillfully avoided, in very broken English, responding when I asked if this change was going to extend my contract for another 2 years. I felt as if I couldn't get a straight answer out of her, as if she was dodging answering my question about contracts. Does anyone know if I change to the Shared Mobile plan now, 5 weeks prior to the end of my 2 year contract, will it automatically force me into another 2 year contract?
