Disgruntled 10 year customer

Last year my wife and I merged our cell lines at an AT&T store. The next billing cycle we received three separate bills. We went back to the store and asked about the three bills. The employee said we were good...the other two were no longer applicable. Last night I received a call from a collection agency regarding a debt collection from AT&T that hit my credit report 17 days ago. Interesting enough, AT&T never called me about the matter but instead directly sent an unknown debt directly to this collection agency (who called me at 1100pm at night).

Needless to say, after speaking with two different customer service reps, they couldn't help me but give the number to the customer service????

I am beyond frustrated and told my wife I want to immediately drop the account and go with a different company because I find it very hard to believe that the company I have my cell phones with couldn't find a way to inform me about this and instead directly send an unknown debt to collections; of course my wife and I are trying to buy a house.

If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it, if not, you will immediately lose s very long term customer.
